TivoliŽ Systems Inc., an IBM company, now offers Tivoli Storage Management
Solutions. The products offered within Tivoli Storage Management
Solutions replace the ADSTAR Distributed Storage Management product
set.
The Tivoli
Storage Manager (TSM), which was formerly known as ADSTAR Distributed
Storage Management (ADSM), is an example of technology developed
by the Storage Systems group
at Almaden Research Center that has become a major force in the
storage industry. TSM is a client/server based system that provides
backup, archive, and disk space management services to a wide range
of clients.
Features of
the product include:
- True incremental
backup (no full backups required)
- More than
30 client platforms and 8 server platforms supported, with complete
interoperability
- Transparent
file migration and recall for client disk space management
- Server storage
hierarchy with client policies and migration rules
- Centralized
backup scheduling and monitoring
- A C language
API for developing installation-written applications
- Command line,
GUI, and Web-based clients
- An integrated
server database for all internal information, with SQL '92 and
ODBC access support
- Server support
for a huge number of disk, tape, and optical storage devices
The TSM server
is used for a variety of other applications beyond simply backup
and space management. Its flexibility and breadth of device support
have made it the object server of choice for everything from digital
library projects to tape file stacking applications. Various projects
are underway at Almaden to extend the functionality of TSM, including
projects related to:
- File Differencing
- Storage Area
Networks (SAN)
- High-speed
data communication paths
- Distributed
nodes
An outgrowth
of our work at Almaden is a project we call Storage Tank. Its purpose
is to design and build the next generation application storage subsystem.
