  • Tour of the Jeri O'Brien Liberty Ship

  • Tour NASA Ames Research Center

  • Tour the Screem project at SCU

  • Fix a Flight Simulator (summer)

  • Whale Watching Cruise (August)

Flight Simulator

Explorers Take to the Skies

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to fly a plane? Have you ever wondered how a flight simulator works to mimic the movements and sights a pilot sees?

We recently acquired an aeroplane flight simulator from NASA and our challenge will be to repair this simulator. The fun really sets in when we test the simulator's capabilities!

See photos of the simulator. Come help us fix it!What a great learning opportunity!

Build A Robot

Have A Spare Robot Lying Around?

The Explorers built a robot during the summer of 1998 from spare parts and materials. The robot frame is built from 1" angle aluminum and has lawnmower tires for drive wheels. The back wheels are a pair of casters. The tethered control is simply two normally open pushbutton switches. The gearboxes and motors are run by a single 12-V gellcell battery mounted directly over the drive axle.

We have more work to do on the robot!First, we need to decide what we want the robot to do!Adding an arm or a camera are possibilities... we can also think about making the robot autonomous by adding some intelligence. Join us sometime and help engineer the Explorer Post 2100 Robot!

Almaden IBM and Explorers Team Up for the Birds

Long-time SCVAS member Charles Wade reports that birdhouse assembling parties at Charles and Kim Wade's house in Los Gatos have resulted in the recent donation of 7 kestrel nestboxes, 24 blue- bird houses, and 15 swallow houses to the SCVAS Bluebird Recovery Program. The volunteers from the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose CA included Scouts from Scouts Explorer Post 2100 (Cathy Balkon, Arthur Runyan, Neal Vora, Brian Armstrong, Nita Jenne, Danielle Carlson, Jennifer Dutra and the Post leader Charlie Balkon). A hearty Thanks to all!
