New IBM Software Delivers Web Content to Range of Internet Appliances
The newly released IBM WebSphere Transcoding Publisher is based on Almaden's Web Intermediaries (WBI) research project. In support of an emerging class of eBusinesses that provide value-added services to help consumers navigate Web content and services, WBI provides the basis for direct digital-to-digital translation of Web data, enabling consumers to access the Web on pervasive computing devices, including cellular telephones and hand-held personal digital assistants (PDAs). In addition to transcoding, intermediary technology makes it easy for companies to build services that help consumers automatically fill in forms, protect their personal data, and receive personalized Web information, among other applications. Intermediaries act like "smart pipes," giving developers a standard way to monitor, edit, and generate information flowing between consumers and eBusinesses to provide value added services.
