Inderpal Narang is a Distinguished Engineer at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California, as well as a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Early in his career in IBM, he worked on enabling cluster of DB2 systems with shared data architecture, also known as DB2 data sharing, making fundamental contributions to the technology’s architecture and algorithms. Today, DB2 data sharing is a widely deployed, providing IBM customers with high performance concurrency control and coherency of data. For his work in DB2 data sharing, Narang received an IBM corporate award and several innovation awards. This achievement, rated "extraordinary" and said to "transform the mainframe,” is one of only 14 since the inception of IBM Research.

Narang also invented DataLinks, technology that extends database management to file data in open and distributed systems. He has been recognized with the Outstanding Innovation Award for the invention, prototype and evangelism of DataLinks. Early adopters of DataLinks include large automotive and aerospace customers.

Currently, Narang is leading research efforts in data grids.
