Objects communicating with other objects...
Objects can
communicate with other objects indirectly through networks and
directly through the use of transponders. A common example of
objects communicating with objects through networks is the ATM
machine communicating with a central computer. Transponder
technology, partially researched at IBM research is comprised of
a small programmable chip that is energized by radio frequency
waves.

Objects that Communicate with Objects using Transponders

FastTrak
FastTrak is a
transponder mounted on a card that is placed in the dash of your
car. When going through a toll gate on a toll road, the
transponder is energized by radio waves sent from overhead
sensors in the toll gate. The FastTrak system recognizes your
card and automatically debits your account--no more stopping at
toll booths, helping clear traffic congestion.
Gas Robots
By placing a
transponder in the flap of a gas cap a robotic gas pump is able
to locate the cap, unscrew it and fill the tank quicker than a
conventional pump and without spilling a drop of gasoline. Since
the customer never has to leave the vehicle, it is useful for
people who live in harsh climates or where personal safety is a
concern. This system is currently being used in Sacramento, CA
and Sweden.
Asset ID
Some of the new
ThinkPads are being shipped with an embedded transponder. This
system is calledasset ID. Asset ID allows for
inventory tracking, custom configurable systems and better
security. Not only will the computer know who it is supposed to
be shipped to, it will also know what software it needs and
automatically download it from the internet when booted up. In
addition the computer will know when it has left a building and
send an alert and can disable itself if in the hands of an
unauthorized user.
