Almaden Computer Science Director's Contest Winners
The Computer Science department hosts an annual contest for all Almaden summer interns for the "Almaden CS Director's Prize". The contest varies from year to year, but is always hosted by one of our research projects, and advances our research agenda. Last year's contest was hosted by the Avatar project.
The 2007 contest was to create data mashups using DAMIA (Data Mashup Fabric for Intranet Applications), a Web 2.0 based service for cataloging and combining data feeds, developed at IBM's Almaden Research Center in conjunction with a team from SWG. A jury of 5 members selected 3 winners based on innovation as well as skilled use of Damia features in the solution:
- First Prize. Sharath Srinivas
Sharath's data mashup combines analyst ratings and stock prices. It determines the quality of the recommendations of various analysts, by checking if past predictions on the stock price held true in the short-term, mid-term, or long-term. By associating a score with analysts based on their history, the mashup then weighs current recommendations of analysts, thus giving the user an idea of which recommendation to follow. Sharat also built a graphical front-end to visualize the analyst scores determined by the data mashup.
- Second Prize: Greg Little
Greg's data mashup combines music and artist data feeds and makes clever use of web search to determine new albums of an artist, and to recommend artists that are similar to that artist.
- Third Prize: Yan-Kai (Danny) Wei
Danny's data mashup combines flickr photos with other information about a city. Danny also developed a front-end to the data mashup that renders the information on a map.
The Damia team congratulates the winners and thanks all participants for their use of Damia as well as for the valuable feedback that we received, which we will use to improve the Damia service.
Participants were able to use an internal version of Damia with unreleased features. However, some of the mashups not using advanced features have been made available on Alphaservices. Please check out these mashups, and clone them or create your own! Have a look at: DAMIA on Alphaservices

Almaden Computer Science Director's Contest
The Computer Science department hosts an annual contest for all Almaden summer interns for the "CS Director's Prize". The contest varies from year to year, but is always hosted by one of our research projects, and advances our research agenda. Last year's contest was hosted by the Avatar project. In 2007, the DAMIA (A Data Mashup Fabric for Intranet Applications) group will host a Mashup Building contest. The goal of the contest is to use DAMIA technology to combine and augment existing data feeds into higher value data feeds that would be used by enterprise mashup applications to solve situational business problems. The contest will commence in June and last for 2 months. The DAMIA system will provide features for community-based ranking and feedback, which will be used to determine the best mashup. The community and all judges will rank the mashups based on their innovation, and practical value to the user community. The winners will be announced mid-August before the summer interns start to leave.
