Past Research Interests
The Search For Meaning In Large Text Databases - Large information
sources are becoming more difficult for an individual to navigate efficiently.
One approach to this problem is the use of machine understanding techniques
to assist the user in fulfilling their information needs.
User Modeling - In order for more consistent and useful interactions
between users and computers, the computers need to begin to be aware of
their users both as individuals, and as parts of communities. This requires
both sensors to acquire this information, and more importantly, methods
of modeling this information in ways that allow programs to make use of
them.
Statistical Modeling of Very Large Data Sets - In order to find
communities from observations of individual users, it is often necessary
to consider large numbers of observations about large numbers of individuals.
This leads to a need for algorithms that efficiently extract from these
kinds of higher level correlations from extremely large data sets.
Information Hiding - Another, unrelated interest is in applications
that allow data to be embedded in media for a variety of purposes, traveling
wherever the media does. This includes watermarking tools, but also more
interesting methods of providing annotation to media.
On line information services - All these interests come together
in on line information systems. The ability of such a system to select
and display information in a timely and relevant way requires an understanding
not just of the content being presented, but also an understanding of the
user for whom the information is being presented.
