Brief Biography
I joined IBM Research in June 2004 as Manager of the Computer Science Principles and Methodologies Group (aka the Theory Group) at the
Almaden Research Center. Prior to this, I was a professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I also served as chair of the Computer Science Department from 1997 to 2001. I have held a postdoctoral position at the University of Chicago and visiting positions at UCLA and Stanford University.

I have chaired the program committees of both the Annual ACM symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS) and the Annual IEEE symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS). From 2003 to 2006, I served as General Chair of the IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS). At present, I serve a two-year term as General Chair of the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems. I was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1993, and was elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2005 “for contributions to logic in computer science.”

My research interests include logic in computer science, database theory, and computational complexity.
