Me and my buddy -- the Soda Machine

Toby and the Soda Machine

The soda machine (a 14 year old cavalier) is a shared hobby here. We've hooked it up to the network, getting it to speak T Spaces for both inventory and customer tracking, as well as remote control. It has a card reader input, a PAN (personal area network) input, a regular coin input, a web input and will soon have Palm Pilot and SUN Java Ring input.

Pictured here is the inside of the machine -- you can (possibly) make out some of the red sensors (and the extra wires) that we added to monitor the activities of the machine. The red sensors that detect when a soda is dispensed are located right next to the white plastic cam disks (the white circles above the black circles). Also, if you look closely a few inches from my right shoulder you can see the "door open" sensor. Not shown are the relays that we use to control the machine remotely, as well as the temperature sensors that tell us how the machine is doing (and if our soda is cold). Unfortunately, the web page for this machine is internal use only.

When not at work ...

I like to play beach volleyball, juggle , play tennis, bicycle (yes, I should have a link for this), read Dilbert , read Calvin and Hobbes (the old stuff, since he's retired), Surfing the country with Mapquest, woodworking (and reading woodworking magazines, which I do much more often than actual woodworking), and fix things (as in everything around the house -- all the time). Yes, I was a gymnast and gymnastics coach in my past, but just about all I can do now is the occasional handstand and watch gymnastics on the web and on TV.

I manage a web page for our Indian Guide nation. Sponsored by the Southwest YMCA, we are the Apache Tribe of the Tonopah Nation.
