Abstract:
The need for security in a more threatening world has forced society to tackle its contradictory stance towards privacy. Certain technologies provide a means to satisfy those concerned with safety and civil liberties, but their implementation is contingent on trust, an elusive quality when it comes to issues of personal privacy.

Biography
Steven Levy has been writing about digital technology and its profound effects for over 20 years. He is senior editor and technology columnist for Newsweek Magazine. He is author of five books including Hackers (1984), The Unicorn’s Secret (1988), Artificial Life (1992) Insanely Great (1994) and Crypto (2001).
