Privacy of Data from the Business Perspective

Abstract:
The central thesis of this talk is that privacy should be viewed as a business issue, not a compliance issue, and we need to develop technological solutions to the problem of designing information systems that protect the privacy and ownership of individual data without impeding information flow.

Biography
As vice president, Worldwide Data Management Development and general manager, IBM Silicon Valley Laboratory, Tom Rosamilia is responsible for all data management software development in IBM, including the award-winning DB2 Universal Database product family, the Informix Database Portfolio, the Information Management System (IMS) product family, Business Intelligence solutions and Data Management Tools software.
From his office at the IBM Silicon Valley Laboratory in San Jose, California, Tom leads data management software development efforts at sites in the U.S., Canada, Germany and Japan. In addition, he is the IBM Senior Location Executive for all campuses in Silicon Valley.
Tom joined IBM in 1983 as a software developer for the MVS operating system. In September, 1998, he was appointed vice president, S/390 software development, responsible for overall software development for the zSeries platform, including z/OS, VM, VSE and Linux for zSeries. He assumed his current position in March, 2001.
Tom received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, with a double major in computer science and economics. In 2002, he was named to the Board of Directors of the United Way of Silicon Valley, the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and the California Manufacturers & Technology Association.
