Biography
Bastiaan Bergman is an Engineer/Scientist at IBM's Almaden Research Center as well as a Ph.D. student in the Applied Physics department of the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. His current research is aimed at understanding the characteristics and mechanisms of the current and field induced domain wall motion in magnetic nanowires as part of the Racetrack memory project. Since he joined IBM Almaden in January, 2005, he has designed and built a scanning Kerr microscope at the IBM Almaden Research Center, especially designed to carry out measurements of domains and domain walls in narrow magnetic nanowires. This tool will allow the characterization of a wide range of magnetic materials so as to explore and understand the detailed interaction of current and magnetic domain walls and identify which materials may be the most suitable for the Racetrack memory

A native of The Netherlands, Bastiaan earned his masters degree in Applied Physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 2004. His graduate research involved the study of magnetic precession in recording media and magnetic phase change materials at Seagate Research, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
