Biography
Nicolas Weiss is a scientist/engineer responsible for the design, construction and programming of several new experimental apparatae for the characterization of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions (MTJ) and related devices. His main project focuses on the design and development of a new experimental setup which uses the Current In-Plane Tunneling (CIPT) technology to measure the magneto-transport properties of unpatterned magnetic tunnel junction films at temperatures varying from room to low temperature. The CIPT experiment will be used to determine the magnetoresistance (MR) and tunnelling Resistance Area product (RA) of unpatterned MTJ film stacks prepared by various deposition techniques within the Magnetoelectronics Group.

A native of Pays-de-Gex, France, Dr. Weiss was educated at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland). He received his Graduate Diploma in 2000 and his Ph.D. in Physics in 2004. His Ph.D. thesis was dedicated to the study of the magnetic properties of two dimensional nanostructures of cobalt. He also designed and built a complete experiment including a magneto-optical Kerr setup and a Variable Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (VT-STM) running in a Ultra High Vacuum environment.
