I have been a Research Staff Member at the
IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, CA,
since
2001 and I am currently with the
Almaden Services Research Department.
Prior to joining IBM I was a Co-Director of the Language and Media Processing
Laboratory, at the University of Maryland, College Park. I received my PhD in
Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA in 1996. At IBM Research I work on two topics: i) Bioinformatics -- machine learning tools and techniques for extracting information for drug discovery and manufacturing for pharmaceutical industry customers, and ii) Services Science -- modeling and understanding complex service organizations for the purpose of reducing inefficiencies and increasing revenue. I have over 75 publications in the areas of: digital libraries, information retrieval, web search and mining, optical character recognition, computer vision, and systems. At University of Maryland (with colleagues) I raised government and industry funding totalling over 3 million dollars. I have co-chaired and have been a member of program committee of the Document Recognition and Retrieval conference. I am a senior member of the IEEE.
