Uninterrupted periodicities can be visually exciting. Consider the
tessellations created by the Moors or those of Escher. But for an
unreconstructed fcc (110) surface, the rectangular surface unit cell
is just plain boring. This boredom launched the artist into his "blue
period", a time during which he found relief by turning the blue-
knob-thing on the computer.

Late in his "blue period" the artist became entranced by three-fold
symmetries, the textures created by instrument noise, and the gentle
play of light and shadow at bridge sites. Here we see what undoubtedly
must be considered the epitome of his "blue period."
